Media Ownership

Media ownership is a very important topic due to its impacts may they be negative or positive on the individual consumer of that media. In today’s digital age media is often consumed heavily over the internet through websites like Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram. We often as consumers actively consume this media without the repercussions that it may have like data leaks, viruses, false or agenda-driven. Media ownership and how important it is can be seen in the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica

The Cambridge Analytica scandal was a event in 2018 when Cambridge Analytica harvested the data of millions of user of Facebook then utilised that data to target the users in political advertisement. Mark Zuckerberg the CEO of Facebook did not take the required measures to protect the users from these kinds of data breaches and so he should be held accountable for the breach. This goes to show how important it is to understand who is the owner of the media and to take measures to avoid websites and media outlets that cannot protect it’s users.

Another exemplar of the importance of media ownership is modern television news and media bias. Bias and Agendas have been around for centuries but in today’s technologically advanced age of the internet it’s has been able to locate and find these agenda bias in modern news sources. One example of this agenda is the recent Christchurch shooting and PewdiePie. In
15 March 2019 at 1:40pm a lone gunman live streamed himself committing a horrific action of a mass shooting at 2 muslim mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Prior to walking through the door the gunman proclaimed “Remember lads, Sub to PewdiePie”. PewdiePie is the most popular youtuber on the platform youtube and in recent months the term “Sub to PewdiePie” has become a centre of attention in popular meme culture as another channel ‘T-Series’ is closing the gap in subscribers and may possibly take the title of the most subscribed channel on youtube. Multiple news sources like wall street journal and others have often held a bias against pewdiePie finding any possible reason to criticize him and this was just another perfect opportunity for them to target him as a fascist and racist. In the wake of this major disaster PewdiePie or Felix posted on twitter “I feel absolutely sickened having my name uttered by this person,”. Even though Felix disagreed with the actions of this crazed gunman he has still been heavily persecuted by the media for his implications with Disney dropping there involvement with Felix and even petitions are being made to remove him from the youtube platform though this is presumed to never be done due to PewdiePie’s fans consisting of over 90 million people standing with him against these bias agendas against him.

Lastly when consuming media a individual should not solely look at one source but rather cross reference with other sources to build a knowledge of the topic then build your unbiased opinion on the situation. People often consume one source of media and it effects how they view the world and the people on it. If the owners of the media cannot be trusted then why should there news articles and videos be trusted.
